Understanding micro-blogging users’ translanguaging in Chinese language play: a qualitative phenomenological approach

Abstract Whilst existing studies have investigated ludic translanguaging practices in diverse contexts, little knowledge is available on dad jokes, a common language play phenomenon Chinese online contexts. To fill this gap, focusing jokes the Weibo platform, paper investigates how and why operate by micro-blogging users. Drawing upon theoretical framework of qualitative phenomenological approach, four types boundary-transcending play: interlingual, image-based, trans-semiotic, intercultural are identified current study. Results from semi-structured interviews with voluntary participants revealed that such creative further facilitated effects ultimately constructed humorous space for viewers as source enjoyment. The findings enrich research literature demonstrating platform multimodal semiotic resources provides new sociolinguistic affordances inclusive, digital literacy play.
